You can find the Dam on just a five-minute walk down the Damrak from the Central Station. De Dam was created in the 13th century when a dam was built around the Amstel. The Dam is a place with a lot of history.

The Dam is full of food stalls, restaurants and shops. You can also find the trendy Bijenkorf, Bonneterie and Amsterdam Diamond centre here. There is always something going on. In spring there is a carnival and in the summer you can find mime players and street performers on this square. Around the Dam are a lots of sites to visit like the Royal Palace and the National Memorial statue. Although no longer home to the Dutch Royal family, this grand 17th century Royal Palace is still used to hold official receptions.
